A traumatic day in the neighborhood

I've been thinking about the families in Colorado that are going through the tragedy of losing their homes to wildfires. Seeing pictures on the news brings the devastation home clearly. But nothing brought it home more clearly than what happened just across the street today. This morning our neighbor's home caught on fire. The couple left for work, leaving their older son at home sleeping. The fire started and quickly spread. The son was able to get out of the house and to a neighbors to call 911. When I walked out to open our gate at 9:30 a.m., smoke was pouring from all the windows and the east wall was a bright orange ball of fire. The first fire engine was already there connecting to the hydrant closest to the home. I could hear others on the way. By 12:30, they were finishing up; the house is a total disaster. The cause - the clothes dryer. Luckily no one was hurt, and two dogs and a cat are also safe. Makes you want to check the lint trap in your dryer, right?

  2. How very, very sad. It's awful that a tiny slip such as forgetting to remove the lint from the trap can end in such a disaster. I won't forget mine anymore!!!!

I'm sorry this happened so close to you. You can't ignore something that's so close to home.

My heart goes out to all of you,

  3. Had some friends lose their house a couple of weeks ago. It isn't fun helping siff through the ashes that had been their lives. But, as in the case with your neighbors, no one was hurt. The sad part is that they are foster parents and now those kids may be moved elsewhere.

It looks like that was a beautiful house, well landscaped with a picket fence. Hopefully they can rebuild a new home just as beautiful. Tell them that they are in our thoughts and prayers.

  5. What a devastating thing to have happened. It breaks my heart to hear of all of fires. My cousin lives in Colorado Springs and is fire weary at this point. It really is a sobering thought that one day you can lose everything in a matter of minutes. My prayers are sent for your neighbors as well as for those unfortunate in Colorado. Also, for you Linda, as witnessing something like that is horrifying, to say the least.

  6. Whoa... scary stuff.

We are back from our Pacific Northwest adventure. Loved it! Trying to get back into the swing of things here. And back to writing.
